National Gun Violence Sabbath 2016

We encourage faith communities to visit this site and learn more about National Gun Violence Sabbath, Dec. 14-18.

We encourage Kansas Faith Communities to participate in this national event, putting special focus on "campus carry", the law that will allow concealed carry of firearms, without training or permitting, on the campuses of Kansas public colleges and universities beginning on July 1, 2017.

Concerns about campus carry:

  • Negative impact on learning environment and free speech

  • Increases in hostility/shift in campus climate (especially for marginalized groups)

  • Decrease in overall safety

  • Faculty and students leave/choose to study in states without campus carry (brain drain)

  • Cost to accommodate the law will be a financial burden (at a time when funding of higher education is already being cut due to the ongoing state budget crisis)

  • Campus police face a more difficult and dangerous job with guns on campus and most do not support this change

  • Will not prevent mass shootings

In the words of Martin Luther King, Jr: “By our silence, by our willingness to compromise principle… by our readiness to allow arms to be purchased at will and fired at whim, by allowing our movie and television screens to teach our children that the hero is one who masters the art of shooting and the technique of killing, by allowing all these developments, we have created an atmosphere in which violence and hatred have become popular pastimes.”
